NFL Week 10 Picks

The Wade Phillips era in Dallas is over. A 1-7 start for a near-Unanimous Super Bowl Contender will do that to a coach. They can’t, as they old saying goes, Fire The Players. They can lock them out, though, and that seems to be likely for at least September next year.

At least I’ll have my Division III Rowan football next year – and hopefully a bit more this year. After yesterday’s win, they’re 8-1, one of the "2010 NJAC Tri-Champions" along with Montclair and SUNY Cortland. SUNY got the automatic bid (depsite having lost to Rowan head to head) to the Tournament. Montclair and Rowan will be considered for at-large berths. The field will be announced today, Sunday, on ESPN News at 3PM.

Yes, you can have a playoff for college football. The NCAA awards 88 championships in 23 sports. There’s only 1 champion it doesn’t crown – Division I-A football (Austin Murphy and Dan Wetzel, "Does it Matter?", Sports Illustrated, (November 15, 2010): 44). Why? My guess is: follow the money trail.

1pm

  • INDIANAPOLIS -7 over Cincinnati. Colts are dinged, but they’re good at home and surely better than the now- back- to- form Bungles.
  • JACKSONSVILLE -1½ over Houston. 4-4, time for my annual give-up on the Texans routine.
  • MIAMI PICK’EM over Tennessee. Go Chad! By Chad I mean Pennington! Makes Zero Sense to start Pennington unless they’re in it to win it.
  • CHICAGO +1 over Minnesota. The Foosball Wizard alerted us to this Festivus-related item about the Vikings. According to the report, Childress "doesn’t have our backs" (whatever that means). I guess the wittle Vikings have all their wittle feelings hurt. Awwwww.
  • BUFFALO -2 over Detroit. The Lions successfully defend their pristine 0-16 season.
  • NY Jets -3 over CLEVELAND. Mangini used up all of his trick plays last week.
  • TAMPA BAY -7 over Carolina. Oh my. Carolina may not win a game again until 2012.

4pm

  • Kansas City -1 over DENVER. Tim Tebow. How was he supposed to help the Broncos again? Perhaps Mr. T can appeal to a higher power.
  • St. Louis +5½ over SAN FRANCISCO. I find nothing to recommend the 49ers. I am secretly (well, I was until I wrote that) hoping that the Rams finish 10-6 to save face for the NFL West. And for the entire NFL, for that matter.
  • ARIZONA -3½ over Seattle. I see no reason to ever pick Seattle again this season. Unless they’re playing the 49ers again at home.
  • Dallas +12½ over NY Giants. I just suspect that Cowboys will hang around 10 points out or so, just a little spark from The Firing.

Sunday Night

  • New England +5 over PITTSBURGH. Pats almost always win in Pittsburgh of late. I think they can stay within 5.

Monday Night

Byes

And that’s it for the bye weeks this year, folks. Everyone will have played 9 games by the end of Monday night’s game. Sorry I forgot there was a game Thursday because I didn’t care. Chicago plays at Miami this Thursday (Nov. 18). That worries me a little – The Bears get a long rest to prepare for a home game against the Eagles the following Sunday.

  • Green Bay
  • New Orleans
  • Oakland
  • San Diego

NFL Week 9 Picks

November is here, the weather is turning colder and the clocks are turning backwards. Yup, it’s week 9, we’re past the halfway point – and somehow the Oakland Raiders aren’t the laughingstock of the league. Doesn’t look good, though, for that coach in Dallas, or the one in Minnesota, or that quarterback in Washington.

1pm

  • BUFFALO +3 over Chicago. Canada’s Favorite Team gets its first win – in Toronto! Yay Canada!
  • San Diego -3 at HOUSTON. Remember Bum Phillips, the old Oilers coach? Yeah, I miss that guy, too.
  • New Orleans -6½ over CAROLINA. When the NBA contracts, maybe they can take the Panthers with them.
  • Arizona +8 over MINNESOTA. Everyone says Chilly is out if the Vikings lose. I think it’ll be close. I hope Eagle fans realize Childress tried to do the shortcut route to a winning franchise. Never works.
  • ATLANTA -9 over Tampa Bay. As cool as Josh Freeman’s hair is, he’s up against a well-rested Falcon team.
  • DETROIT +4 over NY Jets. I don’t think the Jets are in trouble or anything after that loss to the Packers. I just think Detroit is really headed the ri
ght direction and will put up a good fight.
  • Miami +5½ over BALTIMORE. This could be yet another 15-12 type game.
  • New England -4½ over CLEVELAND. Bill Belechik whips up his Most Evil Game Plan this season so far.

4pm

  • NY Giants -7 over SEATTLE. My advice to Charlie Whitehurst would be to pull up with, oh say, a tight hammy or something during warmups.
  • OAKLAND -1 over Kansas City. Run, Oakland, run!
  • Indianapolis +3 over PHILADELPHIA. The Colts can’t possibly win as banged up as they are. And the Eagles under Coach Reid are 11-0 coming off th
e bye! And that’s why I like the Colts.

Sunday Night

  • GREEN BAY -7 over Dallas. Jerry Jones apologized for this mess earlier this week. Wade "Bum’s Son" Phillips maybe oughta try one of Dad’s hats.

Monday Night

  • Pittsburgh -5 over CINCINNATI. Has there ever been an NFL player who’s made so much noise, caused so much bother and, at the End of the Day, really done nothing all that notable? Even that 1998 Playoff catch (remember, against the Packers?) came in a game in which TO had dropped 4 balls and lost a fumble. Really. Read it here: 49ers stun Packers, 1998.

Byes

What? No Mike Singletary this week? Maybe he would have quoted Geroge S. Patton this week. This should tide you over: memorable George S. Patton quotes.

  • Denver
  • Jacksonville
  • San Francisco
  • St. Louis
  • NYG
  • Washington

NFL Week 8 Picks

Today, the NFL features a game in London. England. Why? Heck knows, but those in the know seem to think an NFL franchise is going to move there sooner rather than later. Minnesota? Jacksonville? Buffalo? (See also: Pro Football Talk Week 8 Mailbag).

1pm

  • Denver +2½ over SF (At London) SF is the "Home" team. Which is probabaly a relief to 49er fans. Further proof the NFL is contemptuous of its fans.
  • Jacksonville +6½ at DALLAS. I’ve taking Jax and points all year, and been getting burned. Stockholm Syndrome? The crowd will have plenty to talk about, such as who’ll be replacing Wade "Norv Turner" Phillips at the end of the year. Or end of the game, perhaps.
  • DETROIT – 2½ over Washington. Stafford returns to a pretty good Detroit offense.
  • NY JETS -6 over GB.
  • ST. LOUIS -2 over Carolina. Shame to see John Fox go out like this, but it’s partly his own doing.
  • MIAMI +1 over Cincinnati. I don’t like the Bengals at all.
  • Buffalo +7 over KANSAS CITY. The Bills are bound to cover some time. And maybe even win.
  • 4pm

  • Tennessee +4 over SAN DIEGO. The Eagles wrote up the game plan last week. Can the Chargers execute it? Let’s see if Norv "Wade Phillips" Turner watched the tape.
  • ARIZONA -3 over Tampa Bay. Coaching will help the Cardinals? I guess?
  • OAKLAND -2½ over Seattle.
  • NEW ENGLAND +5½ over Minnesota. This is going to be a great game according to the National Media, because they are a bunch of gossip columnists.

Sunday Night

  • Pittsburgh +1 over NO. Basically a pick ’em, but the Saints just don’t seem right.

Monday Night

  • Houston +5½ over INDIANAPOLIS. This is an "I think they’ll keep it close" kind of pick.

Byes

More Fan Contempt: six cities get to Not Care about football this week.

  • Atlanta
  • Baltimore
  • Chicago
  • Cleveland
  • NYG
  • Philadelphia

NFL Week 6 Picks

I think I was .500 last week, hang on a second. OK, I’m back, yeah, .500. My own Eagles went ahead and won to spoil my chance at breaking the Mendoza Line. Can I use a baseball term here? Sure, why not: The Phillies are in the NLCS! Whoot!

Philly.com reports that Kevin Kolb took most of the snaps this week, and it looks like he’s the start vs. Atlanta Sunday. I think he should play the following week, too, at Tennessee. The week after that is the bye week, so that would give Vick a solid 4 weeks to recover. I think missing 2 games to fully heal is the smart move.

1pm

  • ST. LOUIS +8 over San Diego. I don’t like San Diego.
  • HOUSTON -4½ over KC. Houston has to rebound.
  • Baltimore +4 over NE. ESPN really annoys me. I know it’s not really a sports network, but how do they rank the Steelers over the Ravens when the Ravens just beat the Steelers – in Pittsburgh!?
  • TAMPA BAY +4 over New Orleans. I think the Saints will find a way to win, but I think Tampa will hang tough.
  • Atlanta +2½ over PHILADELPHIA. I don’t understand why the Falcons are getting points. I think they are clearly the better team.
  • Detroit +10 over NY GIANTS. Yes, Detroit has to learn to win on the road. But these aren’t the same old Detroit Lions. I think they can keep this close.
  • Seattle +6½ over CHICAGO. Wait, I meant to pick the Bears. Oh, well, I typed it now.
  • Miami +3 over GREEN BAY. Miami is quite healthy. Green Bay is not.
  • Cleveland +13½ over PITTSBURGH. Pittsburgh re-learned to stop worrying and love the run while that Big Doofus was on suspension. I wouldn’t be surprised if 13 points won the game.

4pm

  • NY Jets -3 over DENVER. I will never bet against the Jets ever again.
  • OAKLAND +6½ over San Francisco. I will never bet on the 49ers ever again. How is an 0-5 team that makes an average of 12 mistakes a game a 6½ point favorite? I think Oakland is playing hard for some reason they’ll keep it close.
  • MINNESOTA -1½ over Dallas. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Sunday Night

  • Indianapolis -3 over WASHINGTON. I think the Colts will be super-ready to play this game, and get a win on the road.

Monday Night

  • JACKSONVILLE +3 over Tennessee. I saw signs of life in Jacksonville last week.

Byes

  • Arizona
  • Buffalo
  • Carolina
  • Cincinnati
